WiFi repeater or mesh: which one you need at home
If WiFi does not reach a room properly, there are three usual fixes: a repeater, a mesh system or an access point connected by cable. They are not the same and do not solve the same problem. This is how to choose without overspending.
Before buying anything: check it is the WiFi
- Test the speed next to the router and in the room that fails. If it is fine nearby but not further away, the problem is WiFi coverage, not the line.
- Move the router. High up, central and in the open, away from metal cabinets and the microwave: sometimes that is enough.
- Connect by cable what does not move. A TV or desktop on cable leaves the WiFi free for phones.
WiFi repeater
It picks up the router signal and broadcasts it further away. It is cheap and easy to set up, but it has two drawbacks: it must sit where the signal is still good, and many models lose a good part of the speed because they use the same radio to receive and to transmit. It works to bring some WiFi to one particular room.
Mesh WiFi system
Several devices working together as one network, with a single name and password: your phone moves from one to another without dropping as you walk around. It is the most convenient fix for large homes, several floors or a garden, although it costs more than a repeater.
Wired access point
If the house has network cable between rooms, a second WiFi point connected by cable gives the best speed, because nothing is lost over the air between the router and that point.
Which one to choose
- Small flat with one room that fails: move the router first; if that is not enough, a WiFi point closer to it.
- Large house, several floors or a garden: several points working together (mesh) or a wired point.
- Many devices at once: WiFi 6 equipment, which shares the connection better between them.
If you are a CloudFibra customer
You can add MegaWiFi, a WiFi 6 (AX1500) device added to your fibre router to take the signal to the whole home. With 1000 Mb fibre, the first one is free for the commitment period (12 months); then €3/month. With 500 Mb fibre, and for each additional device, €3/month. VAT included. We offer a free coverage survey to tell you whether you need it and where to place it.
Next step
Before buying anything, ask for the free coverage survey: sometimes moving the router is enough.

Frequently asked questions
Does a WiFi repeater reduce speed?
Many do, because they use the same radio to receive and transmit. That is why it should sit where the router signal is still good, or you should use a point connected by cable.
Which is better, repeater or mesh?
For one room in a flat, a repeater may be enough. For a large or multi-storey house, a system with several points working as one network is more convenient and stable.
How many WiFi points do I need?
It depends on the home: size, floors and walls. If you are a CloudFibra customer, the free coverage survey tells you whether you need one and how many; you can add up to 3 MegaWiFi per line.
